Starting your Bachelor of Education journey
New to the University of Calgary? Just starting your Bachelor of Education or EDUC 400 or 500-level courses? We can't wait to see you at our Fall Start-Up!
New Student Orientation (Registration Required)
Starting your Bachelor of Education? Register for New Student Orientation, a tradition 20 years strong!
Concurrent student starting your EDUC 400s this year? Join us for our Faculty Orientation Session on Friday, August 30th, at 9.15 am - meet us in the green space by our South Courtyard, just outside of the Education Block (Map)! So that we can best plan our session, please indicate your intent to attend via our Concurrent registration survey.
Audience Note: The full New Student Orientation event is intended for newly-admitted students, while the Faculty Session is open to both newly-admitted students and Concurrents entering their EDUC 400s. We invite all students attending the Faculty Session to fill out our brief survey about your questions for us during orientation!
ESA Snack and Chat
When: Tuesday, September 3rd, 10.00am - 2.00pm
Where: EDT 202 (Map)
What: Start your first day of classes off right by grabbing a snack and chatting with representatives from your Education Students' Association! Drop by any time between 10.00am and 2.00pm!
Audience Note: This event is intended for all Werklund School of Education students!
Student Opportunities Fair
When: Thursday, September 5th, 2.00 - 4.00pm
Where: Doucette Library - 3rd Floor of the Education Block (Map)
What: Join us at the annual Werklund Student Opportunities Fair! Undergraduate students can learn more about our experiential programs and placements from our community partners and Werklund staff.
Audience Note: This event is intended for all Bachelor of Education students, whether you are in a non-Education or EDUC term! We invite our faculty, instructors, and staff to attend, too!
Field Meet'n'Greet
When: Monday, September 9th, 10.30am - 12.30pm
Where: EDT 202 (Map)
What: All pre-service teachers participating in Field Experience this year are invited to our Field Meet'n'Greet with the Field Experience Directors and our Field Team. Come out and learn more about the #fieldselfcarestreak and Field Experience!
Audience Note: This event is intended for Bachelor of Education students enrolled in EDUC 440, 465, 540, and/or 560 this academic year.
Career Mixer: How to Start Subbing 101
When: Tuesday, September 10, 12.00 - 12.30pm
Where: EDT 202 (Map)
What: Chat with your UPE Career Advisor and learn more about career resources available to you, as well as important timeline information around teacher certification during your journey as a final-year pre-service teacher! You will also learn about the basic pieces required for you to be able to start subbing after the conclusion of Field Experience IV.
Audience Note: This event is intended for students enrolled in their EDUC 500s only.
Werklund Fall BBQ (Registration Required)
When: Wednesday, September 11th, 11:30am - 1.00pm

What: Event and RSVP details will be sent to your UCalgary.ca email!
Audience Note: This event is intended for all Werklund School of Education students, staff, and faculty! The BBQ is by registration, and ticketed. Refer to your email for registration and ticket distribution information.
Career Session: Making the Most of Student Opportunities (Registration Required)
When: Wednesday, September 11th, 6.00 - 7.00pm

What: Learn more about how experiential learning and/or getting involved with the Education Students' Association will help you stand out professionally, with perspectives provided by current students and alumni!
Audience Note: This event is intended for students enrolled in their EDUC 500s, though all Bachelor of Education students are welcome to join!
CWF's Environmental Education 101 (Registration Required)
When: Thursday, September 12th, 3.30 - 5.30pm
Where: Education Tower and Outside (Map)
What: Join the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) as we introduce you to the core aspects of environmental education and share some interdisciplinary tools and techniques you can use in your teaching practice to inspire students to learn about and connect with nature! Through this free introductory session, we’ll touch on key learning theories and talk about the many benefits of environmental education to student health and development. By the end, you’ll leave with some initial ideas that you can easily implement in your own classroom.
Audience Note: This session is open to all Bachelor of Education students! Please register early, as there is a limit of 25 participants.

Werklund Create and Celebrate Student Social Event
When: Friday, September 13th, 10.30am - 12.30pm
Where: EDT South Courtyard (or Werklund Gathering Space/EDT 314 in case of inclement weather) [Map]
What: Join us for a student-led event where creativity and fun come together! Enjoy connecting with your peers for crafting, games, and socializing in a casual, lively atmosphere.
Audience Note: This event is open to all Bachelor of Education students, whether you are a new or continuing student.
Werklund Undergraduate Hands Mural
When: August 30th - September 13th
Where: EDT 230 (Map)
What: Join us in celebrating our community by adding your handprint to the mural, a powerful symbol of our unity and shared commitment as incoming 2024 undergraduate Education students. Your unique mark will help shape a vibrant, collaborative future together! Drop by the Undergraduate Programs in Education Office, and add your print to our first annual Hand-print Mural!
Audience Note: This event is intended for all incoming Bachelor of Education students.
Annual Start-Up Scavenger Hunt
When: August 30th - September 13th; Submissions Due 4.00pm MST September 13th
Where: Throughout the Education Building (EDC) and Education Tower (EDT) [Map]
What: Join us for a scavenger hunt to help you explore your faculty and the many student resources available to you! Collect 8 points or more to enter the draw for a Werklund Hoodie!*
To enter the hoodie draw: email upe@ucalgary.ca, with the Subject Line: 'UPE Start-Up Scavenger Hunt' with photos and your filled-out PDF (see link below) attached. Ensure to include your first and last name, and your eight-digit UCID number!
*Available hoodie sizes are M, L, or XL.

Start-Up Advising Hours: September 3rd - 13th
Our Advising Team will be available for in-person walk-ins, 10.00am - 12.00pm and 1.00 - 3.00pm, during Start-Up (from Tuesday, September 3rd, through Friday, September 13th, except for Wednesday mornings during our weekly meeting closures). Please note that regular advising scheduling resumes Monday, September 16th.
